For the second time in franchise history, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been crowned Super Bowl Champions. What was supposed to be one of the greatest matchups in NFL history turned out to be a somewhat mediocre matchup between a “washed” 43-year-old Tom Brady and superstar QB Patrick Mahomes. Brady earned himself his seventh Super Bowl ring, as the Buccaneers defeated the Chiefs 31-9 and stopped Kansas City from repeating as champions.
The Chiefs are no strangers to the Super Bowl, as they defeated the San Francisco 49ers just last year to become champs. Coming into the game, Mahomes had never lost a game by more than one touchdown as a starter. Mahomes had also never faced Tom Brady in the Super Bowl, meaning we were set for a battle of the ages.
After both teams punted on their first possessions early, Tampa Bay completely took over and didn’t look back. The Buccaneers defense smothered Mahomes for the rest of the night as he completed 26-of-49 passes for 270 yards and two interceptions.
The Bucs defense struck with quickness and aggression, as Mahomes ran for 570 yards in the backfield and was sacked three times. This was the only game in which Mahomes did not score a touchdown, as the 9 points earned for the Chiefs were all by a field goal. If the Super Bowl MVP could be given to units, this award would unquestionably go to the Bucs defense.
While Mahomes scrambled for his life, Brady picked apart the Chiefs defense, throwing for three touchdowns, over 200 yards to go along with zero interceptions. The main problem in this game was penalties, as eight flags were thrown during this game against the Chiefs, penalizing them for over 95 yards.
I feel as the referees were way too involved during this game, as most penalties were against Kansas City. Tampa Bay earned themselves six first downs by penalty, and this was only during the first half. Many felt the standard of calls was much harsher compared to the rest of the season, but I believe the refs should not decide any sports matchup, no matter how big or small the stage is.
Brady isn’t a stranger to being bailed out by the refs, as his relationship with refs in the past has not gone unnoticed, but his dominant performance stunned Kansas City.
After going down 21-6 in the first half, any hope for a comeback was immediately shut down by Tampa Bay, resulting in a 31-9 victory for Brady’s 7th Super Bowl victory. Even after the Chiefs shocking defeat to Tampa Bay, it’s unrealistic that we won’t see Mahomes lead his team many more in the future. Brady has lost in the Super Bowl three times and bounced back stronger each time, meaning this isn’t the last time Mahomes will be on this stage.
The Bucs won in a lopsided victory in which I believed would happen when I first saw this matchup. The “Goat’ v. “Baby goat” wasn’t a matchup between Brady and Mahomes but between Mahomes and Tampa Bay Defensive coordinator Tom Boyles. As Brady finally passed Michael Jordan in championships, it doesn’t seem he is slowing down anytime soon, “I’m coming back,” Brady said with a smile at the ceremony.
As we all know to never count out Tom Brady on the big stage, his 7th ring is the most in NFL history and tops any other franchise. Ultimately, the defense of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was the deciding factor in this game, but we all know to never bet against Brady.
