This year’s All-Star Weekend celebrated the diverse culture of HBCUs. From the richness of the court’s design to the bands and singers. The NBA truly gave it their all for this special theme.
Moreover, the games took place on the 7th of March in the State Farm Arena (Atlanta). Atlanta was specifically chosen due to the rich heritage of HBCUs in the local area. Multiple games included the Taco Bell Skills Challenge, Mountain Dew 3-Point Contest, All-Star Game, and the AT&T Slam Dunk Contest.
Hence, the All-Star Game was the obvious main attraction to fans, which included team LeBron and Durant. Both teams included very strong players. Nevertheless, team LeBron took the victory with a final score of 170-150.
An All-Star game includes the best of the best. However, Giannis Antetokounmpo was awarded the Kobe Bryant MVP title. Other winners from events included Domantas Sabonis (Skils Challenge), Steph Curry (3-Point Contest), and Anfernee Simons (Dunk Contest).
Another important aspect was the records that were broken, putting aside the range of both Curry and Lillard. Chris Paul took the spotlight with an All-Star assist record of 128 assists. Moreover, the hall of farmer Magic Johnson’s record was passed by one assist.
In conclusion, this year’s All-Star weekend was a success for the NBA. While the NBA still celebrated and recognized HBCUs through interviews, live performances, and more, many fans got the joy of seeing their favorite players compete and put on a show. The NBA and NBPA will also donate more than 2.5 million dollars to local HBCUs for resources, including vaccines. With these resources, the NBA and many other organizations will keep fighting for racial equity.
