On August 19th, videos were leaked of the Finnish Prime Minister, Sanna Marin, partying with her friends during a night out. As one of the youngest prime ministers in history, she is known for being modern and progressive, something not everyone in Finland is pleased with. The controversy surrounding Ms. Marin’s actions is largely divided between gender and generational lines. Even though her actions are quite normal for a person of her age, some believe that it is inappropriate because of her position. But younger people point out that her actions show that you don’t necessarily have to be old and stuffy to be in politics and that especially for young women, it gives them an example of what a politician can be.

Ms. Marin’s actions do not deserve the criticism that is currently circulating, because she hasn’t shirked her responsibilities as PM. Furthermore, her popularity in Finland is still quite high and is representative of a new, modern generation. Ms. Marin has led Finland through the pandemic quite well and after Russia invaded Ukraine, she made a bid to join NATO, which was a popular decision. Her merit as a politician stands on its own, so how does it matter that she went dancing with her friends to let off some steam? She is human, after all, like the rest of us, and she deserves to live her life the way she wants when she is not on the clock. Some might argue that it’s irresponsible because she needs to be ready to clock back in if there’s an emergency. However, that would imply that government officials should have no private life and should never drink on the off chance that something happens. Leaders all over the world openly drink, why should she be held to a different standard?  Overall, the controversy surrounding these leaked videos is almost laughable, as all they reveal is that Ms. Marin knows how to have a good time, which is nothing to be ashamed of.
