In August, Imagine Dragons, accompanied by Macklemore, performed at the Lakewood Amphitheater in Atlanta, GA. Not only was it a night of a lot of fun and great music, but the artists also demonstrated their support for a diverse range of people. The group hopes to spread positivity along with their music, which is truly inspirational.
Opening
At the beginning of the show, Macklemore excited the crowd in preparation for the amazing night to follow. While he did this, he also spread positivity by showing that he is an ally through his song “Same Love”. This was overall not that surprising, given that Macklemore is very vocal about his beliefs. At this point in the show, audience members like myself thought that these views would probably only be mentioned once and the rest of the performance would be solely music. We could not be further off from reality.
Main Show
When Imagine Dragons came out onto the stage, they performed many songs and got the crowd excited, but they also artfully mixed their own views into the performance. Not only did the lead singer Dan Reynolds speak about being an ally, but he also spoke about the importance of mental health and his own battle with it. He spread the critical message that mental health is just as important as physical health. He emphasized going to therapy does not make you weak. Reynolds spoke about how he had to go to therapy after many setbacks occurred in his life, and how much that therapy helped him.
Overall, the night was filled to the rim with energy and fun, but the positive messages instilled throughout the performance are what make Imagine Dragons stand out from other bands. Fans truly went into the Lakewood Amphitheater expecting to hear only music, but they exited with an entirely new perspective on the band as a whole.
